Born in the home of hip hop during the midst of lyrical greatness Player K(Born as Devine Hendricks) came into the world on August 9, 1989. Born to a single mother in the Soundview section of the Bronx, K grew up listening to the greats of his era. His mother being a dance teacher KC (his family given nickname) was exposed to many genres of music and a variety of artists from Michael and Janet Jackson D’ Angelo, and even soul music to James Brown.
KC would run around the house studying every Biggie verse and would try his hardest to recite every song without the music trying to nail each melodic tongue twister Biggie would spit. As K got older he taste for music grew and expanded through the rap scene. With artists like Jay-Z, Nas, and A Tribe Called Quest, KC took his level of musical inheritance to the next level. Jay-Z was his biggest influence because he connected with Jay-Z on many different levels being from the projects, not having a father, and dealing with everyday issues in the hood. KC believed he had a story to tell so at the young age of fourteen KC wrote his first lyrics and believed one day he too could tell his story just as J did.
In his first year of high school KC attended Stevenson High School in The Bronx where he started to play football. During this time he began to hone his skills in various battle leagues in his high school and started to record tracks during this time as well. Going into his second year of high school KC started to lose his way. He started hanging around the wrong crowd and after a series of unfortunate events he moved to Atlanta, GA where he went to focus on his studies, football and stay out of trouble. In Georgia he attended Stephenson High School and experienced a totally different way of life.
In the South he experienced a totally different type of music with artist like T.I., Outkast, UGK and 8 ball and MJG. These artists influenced his sound in a lyrical sense and the deep 808’s in the music influenced him to rap on southern beats. After two years in Georgia K returned to The Bronx where he attended Kennedy high school graduated received an scholarship to play football at Buffalo State University. KC played football for three years during this time he would write rhymes on long away trips and recite them for his teammates. It was during college where indulged in his music and realized he could actually make money from it. He performed in open mics, various talent shows where he earned respect from his peers on a musical format.
Now at the age of 25 KC has recorded two full mixtapes the first, titled “The Interview” with the influences of his predecessors evident all throughout his mixtape. In songs like N.I.T.H. (Niggas in the Hallway) where he talks about the everyday struggle of living in the projects, and songs like Credentials Feat. Dukes where he talks about how to deal with females his mixtape covers a plethora of topics which many inner city dwellers can relate to. His extra energetic performance style allows him to perform fast pace songs like “Hunnit Mo” and “Holla At Me” which has the crowd jumping from corner to corner of any club, venue, event and bar mitzvah.
