When Lovework was released on Scissor & Thread in 2012, it introduced a sound that felt sharp-edged and highly individual. Jordan Lieb, under his alias Black Light Smoke, molded his very own sound, which could be interpreted as lo-fi house, into something gripping and rough, with rich drums and vocals that sound like they came from a worn-out tape.
The remix by DJ T. retains the grit, but shifts the focus. It is lively, well intentioned, built around a groovy sound and tight percussive accents. The vocal phrases come through with just enough distortion to maintain the atmosphere. Everything is in the right place here.
A track that still holds weight more than a decade on. This week's essential from the Scissor & Thread archives and a perfect addition to our Classic of the week selection.
