The first movement, "searching within" is based on motives of a Slovenian song first recorded in 1834 by Stanko Vraz, “Godec pred peklom” (“The fiddler standing in front of hell”) as well as allusions to the Croatian “klapa” style of a cappella singing, which uses close-spaced harmonies. Towards the end of this first movement, one hears motives of a Romanian mourning song, “My beloved youthful lad,” recorded and transcribed in the 1910’s by composer and ethnomusicologist Béla Bartók, and featured throughout the following movement, "slipping away."
