Siempre Lunes, Siempre Marzo. I. Melquíades, Los Gitanos y el Hielo/Melquíades, the Gypsies and Ice by Reinaldo Moya, Composer published on 2014-09-11T01:54:29Z Orchestral Work centered around the figure of Melquíades, the mystic gypsy in Gabriel García Márquez's epic "One Hundred Years of Solitude." This is the first movement, titled "Melquíades, the Gypsies and Ice." It begins as though we are opening the pages of a magical book, and very gradually, the music of the gypsies and their band emerges in a subtle kind of dance. About two thirds of the way into the piece, we witness the moment when José Arcadio Buendía takes his two sons to see the ice. When he touches it, he is mesmerized and amazed by the feeling of hot and cold. The music depicts this instant and Buendía's consequent wonder at this magical object. This recording comes from the premiere by the Orquesta Sinfónica de San Juan, Argentina under the baton of Maestro Emmanuel Siffert.
