Canterbury
Fully formed in 2007, Canterbury based band Amber Room fuse rock, funk and blues - initially influenced by the US West Coast rock/ grunge scene - originated as a London acoustic duo. The relocation to the heart of Kent to reconnect with nature as well as the escapism from the harsh anonymous realities of city life initiated the transformation into a band complete with drums and electric guitars.
Having been deemed good enough by promoters Amber Room secured invites to several festivals: Hevy, Lounge on the Farm, Zoothousand '08, Small World, and Hop Festival to a fantastic reception and an ever growing fan base.
The front man Matt Clubb is a seasoned singer/songwriter who delivers his honest, emotive and thought provoking masterpieces with self-assurance of a man who battled depression, alcoholism and drug addiction but has not lost the hope for finding an all encompassing inner peace. This hopeful aspiration and joy in simple things remains present throughout his introspective, raw, heartbreaking, melodic exorcise full of hopelessness, anger and self-loathing. “Human kindness and cruelty inspire me in equal measure.”
Joining Amber Room after shaking hands with Paul McCartney and completing her degree at LIPA, vocalist Sueleen Fletcher embellishes the simple, straightforward songs with her own distinctive, hypnotic harmonies. The deep mutual understanding obvious in the long standing relationship enables the couple to complement each other's performance in a mature and enveloping way lending every performance intimate human quality.
The cool and fun seeking (Afro) Phillipp Hall bleeds his psychedelic, 70's inspired lead guitar lines over the solid, clever if sometimes absurd bass lines of the laid back Kiwi Alex Powley whose short UK visit now runs into years. The last to join Amber Room via an obligatory series of jams in search for the right man is a gentlemanly cross genre drummer Ulrich Muhe. The medley of personalities adds different shades of sound to a picture painted in wide brush strokes by Matt's outstanding voice and injects his sometimes sombre and moody tunes with a touch of mischief.
Currently the band are recording their latest EP, working closely with producer Nick Mayes who trained at the world famous BBC Maida Vale Studios, hoping to deliver yet another catalogue commenting on ignorance, destruction and apathy in our society presented in a personal manner of an 'everyman of everyday', making their music accessible for the audience to connect and personify with.
