This podcast was first featured in Issue 2021.06 of AIF's monthly stories: https://stories.arabimagefoundation.org/issue-202106 ——————— 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 The fourth episode of Lamha pays tribute to World Music Day (21 June) by shedding light on the Faysal El Atrash collection, which is made up of 97 paper prints and one photo on film. At the heart of the collection are the many lives of Farid El Atrash and Amal El Atrash (better known by her stage name Asmahan), the Syrian-born brother-and-sister duo who captivated the Arab world with their film and music performances during the golden age of Egyptian cinema. The collection consists of photographs that document key moments from their multi-decade career, including movies they acted in, such as Youth Victory (1941) and Love and Revenge (1944); film premieres in Cairo and Beirut; and glimpses into their personal lives, including pictures of them vacationing at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. Spanning the 1930s to the 1970s, the collection encompasses pictures of other artists who were active during that period: Samia Gamal, Mariam Fakhreddine, Mahmoud el-Meliguy, Ismail Yassine, Sabah, and Hind Rustom, to name a few. The same collection is also home to photographs of major political figures, such as Sultan Pasha El Atrash, as well as high-ranking French officers stationed in the Jabal Al Arab area, also known as Jabal Al Druze. These photographs date back to the 1930s-1940s. This collection came into Faysal El Atrash’s care upon the passing of his father, Fouad El Atrash, who bequeathed it to him upon his passing. Fouad was Farid El Atrash’s and Ashaman’s brother and business manager. The collection was uncovered thanks to researcher Mona Ghandour, and deposited at the AIF in 1998.
