"Gloria (Trans Zimmer) and I (The Djs) grew up together in New Jersey, however we only began to seriously collaborate in 2021 when I asked her to send me her MIDI compositions. Gloria has been a prolific composer since a very young age, and we both shared an interest in certain musical jokes and a maximalist approach to music. We both enjoy music that changes constantly and surprises the listener, without taking itself too seriously. Specifically, the music of Giant Claw and other Orange Milk releases, with their usage of very Hi Def orchestral Vsts and playful arrangements caught our attention, and encouraged us to experiment and try out new styles of music. Other inspirations include: Frank Zappa (specifically the Synclavier albums), Dowop/oldies music, Bach, very fast Eurotrance/Jungle/Breakcore.
I received the Brass quintet arrangement, and made the first demo using instrumentation that constantly changed, and a heavy dosage of samples from Video Games. The result was a sound new for both of us that encouraged us to keep going and create our debut album. I sifted through a large amount of MIDI compositions, ranging from chamber works, to full orchestral arrangements and other diverse compositional experiments that Gloria would send me. My focus was on presenting these compositions in a new light, and exploring as many different timbres as I could get my hands on. It was interesting to see how classical and chamber music could be turned into a wide array of genres by using different drum and efx samples to add a more beat focused element into the music. Some of the tracks lended themselves well to vocals, and I tried to focus on simple stories about Vampires, Naval Warefare, Bathhouses, Medival Knights, and other such fantasies. We both share an appreciation for very literal on the nose art, and don't shy away from simple or even cliche ideas.
Along with a lot of digital/virtual sounds, I tried to always make sure to include some level of real human feeling into the music, be that through live drumming, singing, various percussive gizmos, trumpet, and/or dialogue. We are trying to navigate the current musical climate, which we sometimes feel is either too techno-futuristic or too nostalgic, and hope to find a happy medium, creating music that is forward thinking and uses modern tools/sounds, without rejecting musical/artistic trends and schools of thought that came before us. This Album is a true celebration of all the different music we love!"
