Noise Ceiling • [disquiet 0625] by ᴀᴛᴡ published on 2023-12-25T22:04:17Z "Noise Ceiling" In response to the provided photograph, I assembled a soundscape for a fictional building environment out of a handful of voice memos, field recordings, and atonal/textural modular synth recordings. After sitting with the photograph for a bit, I experienced a sense of familiarity, along with more abstract qualities I'd attribute to the space like 'barebones utility' and 'modern industrial building patina'. I pictured a hallway in a remote part of a building where utility systems might reside—ie HVAC, boilers, water heaters, laundry machines, freight elevators, etc. I also imagined an eclectic commercially-zoned building with rehearsal rooms, maker spaces, and similar. Some tenants might be living there, despite not being residentially-zoned, and there'd be a mix of life and work sounds. Then I layered recordings together, and used convolution reverb, panning, filtering, and gentle limiting to create a simple soundscape to accompany the picture I'd imagined. I exported and resampled the recording in a few different ways, including using my phone to record the sound playing back into the room, then mixing that back in with the original version to add a bit of texture. --- More on this 625th weekly Disquiet Junto project, Noise Ceiling (The Assignment: What does this room sound like?), at: disquiet.com/0625/ About the Disquiet Junto: disquiet.com/junto/ Subscribe to project announcements: tinyletter.com/disquiet-junto/ Project discussion takes place on llllllll.co: llllllll.co/t/disquiet-junto-pr…0625-noise-ceiling/ Genre Ambient
