Avalon history:- https://fairscup.wixsite.com/roy-mc-calvey 1977 Sunday nights in summer. Bay Hotel Cullercoats. Tony on vocals (but sharing them on this one with Roy), John on drums, Paddy lead guitar & no vox from him on this track & Roy struggling with the bass. Song came about from Roy working on a Paddy idea. Paddy said 'can't do anything with this' & so let Roy develop it. Great lead g. from Pad. No frills pub rock band performance. John Darmody (in the enclosed pic, from a few yrs ago, working on vid for 'Avalon our song'), his excellent drumming on this live performance. Rework of roys song written in 1977 and played in Avalon sets at the Bay Hotel, Cullercoats in the bands summer season in that year.
'Fly High' by Roy Mc Calvey copyright lyrics and tune 1977
1) In my time there has been - some changes made in the life of the world
But these things, changes to ring - they don't stop me from telling hot from cold
And one time, I said the right line - she said she said she said
Its not quite mine, but its a good line - its not mine but it was quite finely said
CHORUS
Fly, fly high, fly like an eagle in the sky
Fly high, fly high - well at least, you can (should) try
2) And maybe there's been a lady - one or two like me who are crazy
and friends, some friends - those who leave while some stay to the end
