Cynthia Mare
Harare
Afro Pop, inspirational music from Zimabawe...
Cynthia Mare’s story began in Zimbabwe, where she was born and grew up with a dream of being a singer. Aged 16 she moved to the UK to study and that is where she began her musical journey as an R&B singer. Later on, deciding to make music that reflected her origins and experiences, Cynthia changed her music to an African sound, with influences of Jazz and Gospel. She also incorporated traditional Zimbabwean sounds of guitar and mbira.
In her teens Cynthia Mare sang in the local AFM church choir and at school. Exposed to both her father’s and older sister’s very different music collections, Cynthia had influences from a variety of musicians including Joan Amatrading, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Oliver Mtukudzi and Lauren Hill. Although these musicians undoubtably influence Cynthia, she has horned a sound which is distinctly her own.
Cynthia’s current album, entitled “Songs my mother loved” is a tribute to her late mother, Enita Charewa- Chamboko who lost her battle with cancer. The album has a beautiful mixture of heart-wrenching African soul music, Gospel and Jazzy upbeat songs sang in Shona and English. Honest lyrics, catchy melodies, an authentic Zimbabwean sound and that strong Cynthia Mare voice makes this album a must-have. In the first single, “Zuva Rimwe” she sings of her wish to have another day with her mother. The moving lyrics, vocal delivery and fantastic production from Joseph Madziyire made the song an instant hit in Zimbabwe. Other songs on the album include the touching “Hatina Musha Panyika” and “Pfugama Unamate”, in which Cynthia delivers a strong vocal performance complimented by a Zimbabwean guitar sound. “Ndokutendai Sei” is a fun song that wouldn’t be out of place as a soundtrack on the Lion King Film. Both songs were produced by Clive ‘Mono’ Mukundu.
Past releases include “Catch me whenI fall” in 2010, for which Cynthia Mare attained several awards in the UK including a BEFFTA Award in 2011 and two ZimAchievers Awards. Collaborations include “Catch me when I fall remix” with Nigeria’s General Pype,“Born Champion” with Winky D, Jusa, BKay& Kazz, “We are Africans” with Nigerian producer JJC, “Going In” with UK rappers Scorcher and Young Don. In 2013 She was a mentor on Zimbabwe’s own version of X-Factor, StarBrite, and by the end of the show she was the winning mentor with her artist being the 2013 Starbrite winner!
