1997-2000 Living in Albany located 400km south of Perth, DJ Southside has been a Western Australian DJ, maintaining full-time nightclub residencies & regular DJ support for various EDM festivals in Albany/Denmark regions & Perth regional areas over 1995 - 2012 years.
1995-96 At this time, he wasn't yet known as SSB or Southside. He was called or 'given' the title 'The Hitman'. (appropriate title for its time) This was after SSB met Newby, a W.A. Radiowest DJ announcer at the time. Newby also owned his own mobile DJ business called, 'The Jump Club'. Newby had skills as a DJ, both on the decks & great knowledge of Australian Euro & UK club dance music. It was around this time when SSB asked Newby to show him how he ran his mobile club so well. Newby maintained an up to date & substantial range of 12" vinyl & holding some of the best 90s Euro & UK imported dance releases in that time. Newby introduced SSB to music suppliers, so SSB could start buying his own music. Newby showed him benefits of being a respected DJ, how it wasn't all about playing the best music & reading a dancefloor. He told him the importance in understanding to respect a licenced establishment from when its doors opened & closed. Showing SSB all the moving parts that contributed to it, learning how the WA hotel industry worked, when accommodating for DJs. Newby always recognised the value in ALL employers who worked in those hotels & clubs he worked for. He always reminded SSB that people going out with friends for beer or 10, made him feel great to be paid to do just the same thing, plus get to play the music. SSB says, he was far from any jukebox that sat there as it was walked past when Newby's 'Jump Club' was ever on the scene. Eventually when SSB worked out how to use pitch control and beat mix, was when Newby gave SSB a job of starting nights off to the first group of people who arrived. SSB would mix through Newby's 12" 95-120bpm commercial mixes of 90s dance music at the time. As the venue usually filled up over the hour at sunset, Newby took over & kept the hotels seeming full & vibrant both on dancefloors & its bar until close. SSB say's all the rest of that era, remain great vivid memories & equipped him what knowledge he felt he needed to start his own mobile DJ business, when Newby decided to move away back to Broome W.A.
1996-99 After leaving Katanning with his wife, SSB moved south back to his hometown, Albany. After finding p/t employment, he registered as a business trading as 'DJ SouthsideBass' leaving the 'The Hitman' name as another memory. At this time SSB started sub-contracting himself out as a mobile DJ for Parties, Weddings & hopefully secure local nightclub work. Throughout Albany/Denmark areas, DJ SouthsideBass secured bookings mainly as a Wedding DJ for a range of venues in those areas for over 3 years. At that time SSB was became a highly recommended & reliable Wedding DJ service.
1998-2012 SSB says there will be more to update in time of when he started working in Albany nightclubs and how they massively helped SSB's interests as a DJ & making his own music.
2001-08 One holiday with he's family out buying vinyl, SSB made way to a renowned DJ store for his first time. SSB approached a part owner of 'The DJFactory vinyl & dj hardware specialists', straight out asked, "how does an Albany DJ get into mixing in Perth?" With absolutely no expectations, he "DJ Kenny L'', said to bring the vinyl he just sold him & mix a set at a VIP afterparty as he was in the process of organising an upcoming branded event. This was SSB's first time to appear the bill called, "Spiritual Healing". SSB's DJ'ing career took a leap forward, meeting international DJ's as he scored DJ support at many of Perth's biggest festivals & club events that Kenny L had worked along with other promoters to organise. From there SSB made many more friendships & many supporters who shared along the same passions with all different genres of dance music. 'The DJFactory vinyl & dj hardware specialists', sadly closed its doors in 2014. Kenny L still remains close friends with SSB & his family.
