Dream Kit Declan Kelly Melbourne Over the last 18 years Declan Kelly has established himself as a unique voice in Australia’s contemporary sound art community. His eclectic sensibility and keen sense of rhythm is always at the forefront of his work as a music producer, recording and mix engineer, DJ, sound designer and broadcaster. Swept up in Melbourne’s late 90’s electronic music culture, Declan began DJ’ing in 1997 at the age of 16. His love of Detroit’s soulful machine music led him to explore deep into the roots of electronic music through his DJ sets in clubs, festivals, bars and radio programs The Leisuredome (3PBS FM, 2000-2003) and Against The Arctic (3RRR FM, 2005-2010). These acclaimed programs were freeform sonic excursions which championed Australian and overseas electronic music, and contextualised it against influences from the worlds of jazz, funk, soul, disco, reggae, industrial and experimental music. After graduating from the VCA with a Graduate Diploma in Sound Design in December 2006, Declan worked as a primary sound artist on Africa, Night Garden and Posts In The Paddock with award winning company My Darling Patricia as well as Arena Theatre, Ranters and Thin Ice. In 2017, Declan is working across a variety of forms; as mix engineer with electronic trio Saatsuma, producing artists, collaborating on various sound design projects and finishing the sophomore Dream Kit EP, a follow up to 2016’s Dreamixes EP. Declan is also a busy classical music engineer working with Rubiks Collective, Anon, The Letter String Quartet and other Melbourne based chamber ensembles and soloists.
