After meeting at university back in 2005, and starting as a DJ duo in 2007, Elijah & Skilliam's kinship has taken them around the world numerous times, and led to them working with pretty much every one of their local musical heroes. The DJ partnership that so far has been epitomised on two official mix albums (2011's Rinse:17 and 2014's FABRICLIVE75), a compilation series succinctly called 'Grime' (with editions in 2015, 2016 and 2017), over 300 radio shows for Rinse FM (2008-2014) and over 100 editions of their roaming club night they run independently, Jamz.
In 2010 they founded Butterz, the record label and club night to release music they were being sent from artists that later became their core roster: Swindle, Royal-T & Flava D. From 2010 to 2019 they had records featuring TQD, D Double E, Footsie, Ghetts, P Money, S-X, Joker, Flowdan, DJ Q and many more. 2020 is a reset year for the label, introducing new artists, alongside friends from the wider sphere of influence they have curated over the years.
Butterz club shows have at their core represented Grime, but have always gone left and right of the sound bringing in producers from other worlds into their universe. The blueprint for what Butterz club shows are started in 2011 at their first club residency at the now closed Cable which featured guests such as Kode 9, DJ EZ, JME and Skepta. They moved onto a 3 year residency at fabric hosting all the Grime heavyweights like Kano, Wiley, Big Narstie, Novelist and the Newham Generals. Audio and video from these shows have been shared online and collectively have millions of plays from all over the world.
Off the decks, they both work behind the scenes on projects with away from Butterz. Elijah is an independent curator who is a former Artistic Director of Brighton's Lighthouse, and has produced and collaborated on work for York Mediale, Lisson Gallery, Centre Pompidou and more. Skilliam has worked on creative operations for artist's projects, and has delved into production appearing on TQD's UKG album.
On the decks they play between 130BPM and 160BPM with the Grime being the heartbeat of the set. But as their new 01012020 and onwards mix series shows, they are unafraid of experimentation, shuffling through Bass, Garage, Kudoro, Gqom, and more.
