Audio Rule Sound Tyler Hipnosis Tylerhipnosis is a Stillwater bred, Durham raised producer, emcee, sound designer, entrepreneur and deejay. His name is an acronym: Terrestrial Young Leader Electronically Relinquishing Harmonious Interstellar Polyrhythms Nature's Own Stereo, Interpreting Sound. He was born Elijah Vick in Stillwater, Oklahoma with first generation roots to Nigeria where he is heir to the Tiv throne. When Elijah was 12 his mother made a big move, packed up her three children, Elijah along with his two older sisters and moved to Durham, NC. Upon arrival the Oklahomans endured some struggles attaining stability but once they settled there was no looking back for Elijah. When Elijah was 14 he got a job at the local record store under the very intelligent Madd Waxx who was also a mentor to the budding creative. Elijah developed a passion for sampling after being exposed to fellow Durhamite and Grammy award winning producer, 9th Wonder, who hosted a radio show after the one being hosted by Elijah. Madd (James Heyward) got Elijah into radio at Duke University radio WXDU where he was able to practice his deejaying and sampling skills. Though the hip hop music scene was not Elijah’s only outlet. Also at Duke, Elijah was a part of Youth Voice Radio, which gave him exposure to many different types of music where he gained an appreciation for styles outside of what he was accustomed to hearing. At school Elijah saw the natural connection between deejaying and theatre sound design. He also saw sound design in theatre as more of a career path that would allow him to continue in his passion. Continuously recording under the alias Tylerhipnosis, Elijah gained a name for himself in and around the Triangle. He was a natural teacher and gained a great deal of experience making his own recordings and helping others to gain a better understanding for recording software. Elijah continued in theatre throughout high school greatly standing out to his teachers and counselors and with their backing and support Elijah went on to study at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston Salem. Elijah studied sound design under the great Jason Romney and David Smith where he gained skills in EQ, dynamics processing, theatre etiquette and concept design and build. Upon completion of his studies at NCSA Elijah came back to the Triangle and enrolled at Saint Augustine’s College where he joined the Film and Theatre program. Elijah designed a play at St. Augustine’s College, which was a great success. At the play was a member of the local Burning Coal Theatre who was very impressed with Elijah’s skills and asked Elijah to design their upcoming Twelfth Night. Needless to say they were impressed and Elijah became their resident sound designer for two seasons. Toward the end of his tenure at Burning Coal Elijah met his wife Alicia. They got married, had two children and moved back to Durham where they formed a sound design company, Audio Rule Sound Design. Now based out of the famous Golden Belt historic district and artist community, Audio Rule Sound Design is growing and proving its strength enduring in a tough economy. Their passion at heart is the uplifting of their surrounding community and they have formed the Audio Rule Audio Education Institute aimed at providing underprivileged youth with skills in audio recording and sound design which will ultimately serve as a boost toward their futures. Elijah teaches a myriad of recording software, practices and techniques. Each course runs for 10 weeks at the end of which students are certified in recording arts. Elijah has a continuing goal of spreading a message on how to appreciate and archive good music. By studying the influence of amazing music he is teaching his message as well as creating in it.
