Lehasa Moloi
Johannesburg
A small town boy with big town dreams, Lehasa Moloi aka "Hasaling" was born in the sleepy mining town of Welkom and adopted by Jozi the city of lights. His surroundings now befitting his ambition, the 27-year-old actor and model is gunning for the top of the SA music charts. His love for rap and hip hop began in high school cyphers (rap battles) and progressed to production via software like Hip Hop Ejay and Fruity Loops. Being from the suburbs, the cyphers didn't happen on the street but at house parties, school quadrangles and even Sandton City; but don’t get it twisted, armed with booksmarts and life experience, his rap skills were honed to the point where he could stand toe to toe with the best of them. Hasaling didn't stop there, furthering his musical knowledge with a sound engineering certificate and musical instrument and vocal training throughout his career, even though acting dominated. This was until he met talented producer Brian Beatz, a meeting which sparked a connection tantamount to when Will Smith met Dj Jazzy Jeff. Hasaling's flow has been likened to that of Will Smith as well as LL Cool J; his hip hop influences include The Notorious B.I.G, Jay-Z, Slick Rick, Will Smith, Guru, Fabolous and Kanye West. Hasaling tells his truth, being honest to whom he is: a true South African boy from a small town, raised by a single mother, who's seen a couple of things growing up. He doesn't believe in objectifying women and when possible, keeps his lyrics vulgarity free. Hasaling places high value on the social plight of men and minority groups. He believes that it’s up to men to stand up against what they feel is wrong in our world, be it abuse, rape, gangsterism, drugs, violence, racism, ageism or corruption, issues he addresses through his music. Hasaling, derived from his name (Lehasa), the word "hustle" and the suffix "-ling", connotating a different type of being (earthling/hasaling), intends to be different, in all ways, to his competition.
