After witnessing a glorious sunrise over the Pyrenees mountains and performing the customary closing ceremonies of the witch coven, the little witch gave a long goodbye hug to her two sisters witches and flew straight to the North, back to her home forest. At least, that was the original flight plan, but shortly afterwards she veered off course and headed straight towards the East, simply following her inner compass. Soon she was flying over the Mediterranean Sea and for hours and hours she continued flying towards the East, until finally she saw a large mountainous island in the distance. She sensed this must be Corsica … the enigmatic island full of mystic and magic of which she had heard many tales from elder witches.
After crossing the coastline, it was a very steep climb all the way up to the mountain ridge which runs through the middle of the island, where she was forced to land as the other side of the mountains was covered in thick fog and clouds. The view from above was absolutely stunning and it struck her that these mountains were very different from the Pyrenees … rough and rugged with very steep slopes and vertiginous ravines. This desolate rocky place was named ‘Cirque de la Solitude’ for a reason. A few minutes later, the witch heard some voices in the distance and she quickly hid behind a granite rock. It turned out to be 2 young women with a heavy backpack, hiking along the grueling GR20 trail.
The hikers looked absolutely innocuous, but as witches avoid all contact with humans, she decided to hide a bit further away from the trail. A few hours later the fog finally cleared and the witch could have a look at the majestic landscape in the east, overlooking the island all the way down to the Mediterranean Sea. The girl decided to descend towards the east. It was an epic walk down the mountains which took several days, passing through an ever changing landscape of rocks and waterfalls, but also majestic beech forests interspersed with lush green meadows. The girl survived by eating wild berries and drinking water from natural wells, and she noticed that the water had a unique ‘Corsican’ mineral-rich taste.
As always, the little witch stayed away from human settlements, but at one point she stumbled upon a group of Corsican men, who turned out to be the members of a choir. Without saying a word, the men gave an improvised a cappella concert of age-old polyphonic songs for the girl, so beautiful it left the witch spellbound and in tears. After their impromptu performance, the men walked away without uttering a single word (Corsicans – like witches - are not known for being talkative).
The last section towards the sea was a swathe of the typically Corsican ‘maquis’ vegetation, which is basically an impenetrable maze of shrubs. The girl ran around in circles and turned back time after time for 3 days and 3 nights, until the tenacious witch finally found the way out towards the sea. After reaching the beach, she didn’t hesitate one second, threw away her immaculately white dress and took a refreshing dive into the sea. She really enjoyed this bath and soon she was splashing her long brown hairs around wildly. After cooling down a bit, the little witch felt the urge to dive into the deep blue water, where she was joined by a group of colorful jellyfish, who were dancing and pulsing around the swimming girl. The jellyfish showed her the way to the deeper sea, far away from the shore. They brought her to the king of this part of the Mediterranean Sea, a giant octopus who was resting on the sun-lit seabed. After having a closer look at the girl, the octopus saw she was a pure-hearted witch and gave her a warm and long welcome hug. This was a really special feeling for the witch, as giving a hug to a creature with 8 long arms is an unbelievably intense and surprising experience …
