1983 Teac MR-30: Recording Pitch CV onto FM Encoded Tape... by Hideaway Studio published on 2021-03-19T00:39:27Z Hey folks try doing this on your average tape deck!... :-] I'd been meaning to try this experiment for some time now and was delighted to find it actually works quite well... Unlike normal tape recorders, the TEAC MR-30 records analog signals down to DC as FM encoded audio tones originally for laboratory use to data-log experiments - so I got curious and had a go recording pitch CV from a Moog System 55 straight to tape and then playing it out into one of the VCOs - to my delight not only did it work but when you change the tape speeds everything changes speed with it without affecting the pitch - the cool bit is that its all slightly wonky and adds a curious human feel to everything in the process. Heck it even plays backwards. The even cooler bit is that the MR-30 can record and play up to 7 tracks (which can be a mixture of CV and audio) so at some point I might have a go doing something similar but with a full CV controlled setup. The MR-30 can also do cool stuff to audio (which it was never really intended for) including transposing down several octaves without revealing the bias oscillator: https://soundcloud.com/hideaway-studio/slo-mo-mu-30-070120 Recording Copyright D.A.Wilson, Hideaway Studio, 2021.
