Miami
When driving into the great state of Mississippi, the welcome sign entering the Magnolia State aptly reads: “Birthplace of America’s music.” As the origin of the blues and gospel, Mississippi laid the foundation for soul, R&B, country, pop, rock, and hip-hop. Artists as diverse as BB King and Robert Johnson, to Brandy, Big KRIT, Rick Ross and even Elvis Presley all have roots in the dirty Magnolia.
They took the seeds given to them from their backwood breeding grounds and harvested them all over the globe. Up next to add his name to the long line of world-renowned Mississippi artists is 21-year-old Miami-based, Mississippi native rapper/producer/songwriter Big Darrell.
Steadily gaining momentum online with his driving, amped-up production and hard, face-slapping lyrics, Big Darrell is following in the footsteps of those who came before him. And he is placing himself in perfect position to make major marks in the music industry with new single “I Will” featuring Fly Lo and forthcoming album 9Ether, set to be released Winter 2016.
“I call my music hip hop soul because of the energy I bring to the track,” says Darrell. “It’s got the club vibe with a warm feeling to the music.”
Born Darrell Allen and raised in the sleepy coastal town of Moss Point, Darrell came up under the wise wings of loving parents in a house full of music. Be it blues, jazz, soul, funk or gospel, his parents played music religiously. So naturally, Darrell developed an early appreciation for the sound of music.
In school, he played football and baseball but lost the desire to play after surgery on his already bowed legs. Being a 6-foot-8, 350-pound teen caused problems that needed immediate attention. It was after the surgery that an aunt gave Darrell his first computer. It was a second hand, 10-year-old dinosaur, but had recording and music production programs already installed. Darrell mastered the computer programs and began recording neighborhood kids on his makeshift home studio for a small fee.
Before long, he saved up enough money from those studio sessions, working odd jobs and having his earnings matched dollar for dollar from his parents, he graduated to his very first Mac computer. It was on this very computer that earned him a full scholarship from the Art Institute of Miami. He graduates in June with a Bachelor of Science degree in audio engineering.
Being in Miami gave the young artist a platform to share his music and make an impact. He dropped his first self-produced single “Stanky” in 2013, creating an undeniable buzz online. He continued to feed his audience with celebrated singles such as “What You Want” and “Bout It,” both featuring Fly Lo. Now with the release of his new single “I Will” and forthcoming album 9Ether, set to be released Winter 2016, Big Darrell is taking great strides in making himself the hottest new artist to keep an eye on.
