Kathryn Kaye
Kathryn Kaye grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of southeast Kentucky. She began playing piano at the age of four, and music became an essential part of her life. She majored in voice and keyboard in college, then moved to Germany to further her training. Before and during her time in Germany, Kathryn performed professionally as a folk singer and soprano soloist in concerts, recitals, and operas, and she has been a soloist on TV in both Germany and the United States.
As a composer, Kathryn has been influenced by the simple harmonies of the folksongs and hymns that she heard, sang, and played as a child, by her years of experience with classical music, and by the beauty of the Rocky Mountains where she now lives. Her music ranges from compositions with strong, emotional melodies through more contemporary, meditative, instrumental pieces.
Kathryn has composed both instrumental and lyrical music for a wide range of genres, including solo piano, jazz, New Age, classical, country, and folk.
Her first CD, Dreaming Still, was released in January 2011. The album, which was recorded and produced by Will Ackerman at Imaginary Road Studios in Windham County Vermont, was #1 on the Zone Music Reporter Top 100 music chart for the first two months following its release. It finished the year ranked #2 of over 2300 CDs, and Kathryn garnered nominations for Best Album, Best Instrumental Album, and Best New Artist for 2011.
Kathryn continues to work with Will Ackerman and several other outstanding musicians, including Tony Levin (bass), Eugene Friesen (cello), Tony Bisharat (violin), Jill Haley (English horn), Jeff Haynes (percussion), and Gus Sebring (French horn). Heavy as a Feather and What the Winter Said, her next two albums, reached #2 and #1 on the chart. Heavy as a Feather was nominated Best Instrumental Piano Album of 2012, and What the Winter Said won Best Holiday Album for 2013. Her fourth album, Patterns of Sun and Shade, released January 1, 2015, opened on the ZMR Chart at Number 1, and at the end of 2015 it ranked Number 5 out of over 2,100 albums tracked by ZMR. Her fifth album, There Was a Time, is set for release on February 1, 2016.
