Can Israel’s Left be part of the liberation of Palestine? Palestine must be freed – but how and by whom? Palestinians are politically excluded, and for the most part marginalized economically. For this reason, many on the Left believe that the Israeli working class must play a role in the liberation of Palestine. Indeed there is resistance to apartheid within Israel, but it is repeatedly hampered by the national question. The structures of settler colonialism are anchored in all parts of society. This raises a vicious dilemma: a true left must challenge these structures, which is never popular or easy; yet a „left“ which fails to do so is doomed to remain part of the oppressive system, and can be no partner in liberation. In the current Israeli government, supposed „leftist“ parties have become participants in systematic dispossession and repression; but further left, there are still small Israeli groups opposing Zionism. Who has the power to overcome the occupation in Palestine? (How) can Israeli Leftists play a progressive role? And how can the international Left help? Speakers Michael Sappir from Jewish-Israeli Dissent Leipzig, renowned historian Ilan Pappé and Maayan Ashash from Jüdischer antifaschistischer Bund will talk on this subject matter.
