Mako - The Truthseekers EP promo mix by Metalheadz published on 2014-06-27T16:50:55Z A promo mix from Mako to promote his recent Truthseekers EP on METHXX..... Order the EP from http://bit.ly/methxx06 Meth XX is the fertile breeding ground for new Metalheadz artists that gives them a chance for to express themselves with the music they are making right now. We interviewed Mako about the creative process behind the EP too: Where does the EP title come from? The title comes from an ethic that I feel my friends and I share. Its a openess, honesty and search for contentment and our truth about our place in the universe. It has hyper levels of 'don't take yourself too seriously' cheese too. Did you have a specific aim for this EP in terms of sound or concept? My main concept involved the actual engineering. I said to myself that I wanted all the mixdowns to be different, but all have the quality and power needed so they could be presented fairly to my favourite labels in the drum and bass world. I wanted to stand apart from anyone who didn't spend time on mixdowns, kinda like teching-out your CV for a job I guess. The production/arrangements were all done over the space of a few months and the mixes done in a few weeks at the end of the process. As far as sonic content like the pads, vocals and sound effects, I wanted them all to have an air of menance but at the same time a harmonic and whole sound. What do you think each collaborator brought to the table? Gully was started from a loop that a good friend of mine Schmifto (aka Sine) came over to the studio with. I loved some of the bass, he has got a real sense of this '97 tech step business with his overall sound. Detail came with some sickness as always, a great bass pattern and some lovely interchange of sfx. I added some beats and tried to do more of a Source Direct arrangement with this 4 minute vocal switch. Its probably the tune that helped me most in working out what to do on turnarounds in reference to breaks, filters and how to make bass as I was going along. Throwing Snow came with vibes and a kick pattern idea that we experimented on. I found some pads I really liked and a beat that was originally in a tune that I did with Fields and Sine called 'Masifi', took the beat to the Symmetry studios, smashed it through one of Break's compressors and then moulded it into the mix with Ross (TS) showing me how the kicks should go. What are the benefits in collaboration? Ideas come a plenty. It is also extra motivation to actually finish the tune too. If I deem a project worth starting with someone it means it has to be finished. Some music takes years to finish but I have a hundred tunes on the go all at different stages and dip into them as and when the inspiration is there. The Throwing Snow tune just came together when he showed me a kick pattern, I used some of my old beats and bass and pads to get an idea going quickly whilst he was in the studio. It took me a year to finish and give it the mixdown I thought the tune deserved. So yeah, collaboration gave me the resilience to get the job done AND the original idea that sparked off the musical mission. Very important, as is all the family (musical relationships or not). Everyone collaborates with influence and inspiration and have an effect on the music that most of the time is unspoken. What's your favourite track from the EP? No favourite, love them all in their own ways. I guess 'Tell Me Something' is a sound that I've been experimenting with a bit recently as I don't really write bangers like 'Gully' most of the time. I love the more tribally rhythms. But I do love the pads and beat arrangement on the Throwing Snow collab, probably some of my better work. I do love the mad water fx in Gully's middle breakdown, its a different flavour to just using dark bass. What's next release wise from you? Solo shreds on C.I.A (big ups Smiff and Quiff dog, need to hit Rosemarino's soon brothers!), Symmetry Recordings (big up brother Break, always coming with the lashdown), an EP on Dispatch, my 3rd 12" on Warm Communications who seem to like to put out my experimental stuff (big ups Heath, thanks for the support man), some collaborative projects on Metalheadz and Utopia, and fingers crossed a solo album or EP (I can't decide) out on Utopia too AAAAAAND an EP for Goldie too with a tune called 'The Narrator' which people have been buzzing about too after he played it as his last tune at the 20 years of Headz night at Fire in London. We've decided to release a couple of our old unreleased tunes on Ingredients as a throwback to the 'Mute & Mako' collaborative project that I was doing with Fields and Villem. Hydro and me have a chilled 170 hip hop thing coming on Horizons too. I just wanna build an extensive catalogue of varied music but which (mostly) has the same ethic. Thanks for the interview brother.
