New Rock-Tober 6 (The Right Hand Of The Drummer) by Michael McMahon published on 2019-03-29T18:44:16Z This week song is an homage to the drummer, specifically the right hand. That’s the hand that plays the High Hat. (Unless you are a lefty…) Being a bass player I’m always standing on the stage right next to the High Hat and am listening and grooving and lovin’ it. There is always a passel of toys for a drummer to bang on up there on the drum riser but it’s the Snare, The Kick drum, and the High Hat that make the groove. This particular groove comes from Gary Taylor, who is one of the best, if not the best drummer I’ve played with. Let’s face it, he and I have done about a ga-million gigs together, in a hundred different bands. So he has been very influential to me and the way I hear the drums, especially when I’m writing. This one was maybe the 3rd song I wrote back when I started writing. I took, or you could say stole, the High Hat pattern and built the rest of the song from there. But that was the easy part, the drums and bass parts that is… Then I had to come up with changes, melodies, instrumentations, arrangements… The hardest part and the last part was the solos. Very tuff, specially the drum solo. I still think it needs some work but it is what it is. I’ll work on fixing it again when the time comes. Ok, there ya have it, enjoy… Genre Jazz/Rock
