THIN AIR.1 - Emiddio Vasquez by Moneda published on 2021-01-01T16:44:06Z THIN AIR A 2020 salutation, with full awareness that the worst is yet to come, we welcome 2021 in perseverance. Unconvinced by the spotify algorithmic listening and pay-to-include playlists, in 2021 we will test out a series of commissioned sets titled THIN AIR, in which we will invite artists to reflect on what air means to them. THIN AIR because 2020 has been marked by the lack of it. From George Floyd’s “I can’t breathe” to the thousands of patients on ventilators, from the filtering of our breaths by masks to the reduction of emissions due to lockdowns. All these observations lead one to suspect that we may be entering a new period in which air takes a new commodity form: pay-to-breathe. First in the series is label founder Emiddio Vasquez who will also be curating this series. Drawing from his 5-year bespoke tier mixtape sets (@tiered), as a result of a breakout set on NTS’s Open Air, he presents a set that spans the styles and aesthetics Moneda will be exploring for this coming year. Without giving out too much, the set is entangled and over-coded with references, at times perhaps in overtly ways. Opening with Dj Screw’s screwed up version of Phil Collins “Something in the Air” is an indirect homage to the figure of George Floyd who was part of Dj Screw crew in the 90’s, followed by Natascha Sadr Haghighian “Tribute to Whistle” and Graham Lambkin’s “Dumb Answer to Miracles”, a set of references to the gesture of breathing in whistling and chanting. All are overlaid with a near death experience during a flight, bat recordings and radio atmospheric phenomena all recorded by Vasquez paired with Michael Prime’s bat work in “Priory Gardens”. A brief reflection on “post-club” dance music now feels like a bad joke and yet prescient as fuck. These set the stage for what follows. Laced with many unreleased forthcoming work on Moneda, as well as a celebration of the dusty medium of vinyl that has finally made its proper debut in Cyprus this year, the set concludes with bright glimpses of inspiration and hope. Creating is afterall one form of resistance and this year it was really the only thing that kept us going. Thank you to everyone who supported us in these challenging times. Cheers to all cancelled plans. We only organize better now. Long live infinite deferrals and extended crises. Enjoy.
