Turkey Roost by Lang Elliott – Music of Nature published on 2021-07-04T19:52:46Z During an early May visit to Aravaipa Canyon in Southeast Arizona, I was fortunate to discover a favorite roost location for a flock of Wild Turkeys (Gould's subspecies). It was in a tall Cottonwood Tree surrounded by brushy habitat. This recording conveys the diversity of sounds the turkeys made at dawn, just prior to leaving their roost. Listen for the gobbles of males, the excited yelps of females and immatures, and the rapid liquid chirts or purts, which signify alarm (maybe they saw a hawk?). Listen also for the very low-pitched hums, presumably given by males. Recorded 1 May 2021 in Aravaipa Canyon, near the east entrance (not far from Klondyke, Arizona). © Lang Elliott.
