Cirrus by Nick Bennett published on 2015-12-22T18:42:09Z Cirrus - my first XG (eXtended General MIDI) composition using the YAMAHA DB50XG. Written through 1995 and much of 1996 it is pretty much the culmination of everything I learned in electronic composition. There is a significant delay at the beginning as the entire instrument set is programmed into the hardware before... Part 1: Piano introduction - it actually was played live for recording. Basic drum set and synth string chords. Violin melody joins in - the vibrato on the strings was programmed to be in time with the rhythm. Synth flute joins the piano at the end. Part 2: Two "dueling" deep bass parts, an instrument called an "Oud" - played as octave doublets, alongside slap bass guitar. Driving electronic drums and choir in the background. Fades into... Part 3: String quartet - each part played separately with piano accompaniment and pizzicato strings. Making the point that I didn't always need a drum track. Part 4: Whalesong to start things off...more of a Dance track with phased synthesizer, arpeggiated chords, choir and the third drum set brought into play. Linking piece: recapitulates motifs from earlier in the track. Part5: a remix of an earlier track I had written called "Tribute" for my late Uncle Nigel. This version had an additional more upbeat stanza inserted into the relatively melancholy track. Two harps, synth bass, chords, and melody, leading to a choir-led section and a finale with distorted electric guitar lead.
