John Hegley On National Prison Radio by Prison Radio Association published on 2015-03-04T07:09:24Z National Prison Radio brings books to new audiences. We believe engaging the imagination can be a crucial tool in helping people to turn their backs on the factors that lead to criminal behaviour. Literacy skills among prisoners are notoriously poor. National Prison Radio plays a crucial role in encouraging prisoners to develop reading skills: through the nightly book-reading 'Books Unlocked'; and through the inspirational contributions of big-name authors. Authors are regular visitors to the National Prison Radio studios in Brixton, Coldingley and Styal prisons, and when authors visit other prisons, our staff are there to record them and broadcast their words to over 70,000 prisoners across England and Wales.
