1984 by Ryan Duffy published on 2022-10-30T15:46:45Z As a strong believer in program music, I was interested to work with Orwell’s story in a musical setting. I felt that the dystopian and unsettling nature of the story was a perfect way to help expand my harmonic vocabulary. The passionate love story between Winston and Julia was also very well suited for the romantic style of melody which I enjoy writing. Those sections provide contrast to the dissonant and harsh themes of the oppressive Party and Big Brother. The attached recording is from the premiere performance, and the piece is scored for Clarinet in A, Viola, and Piano.
