Tony Michaels
Blairsville
Tony Michaels hails from the small town of Blairsville, Pennsylvania, which is 40
miles east of the city of Pittsburgh. When he was a toddler, his mother bought the
album, "Meet The Beatles", and that's where it all started for Tony. Not only did he love
the music, but when he learned that 2 of the Beatles, John Lennon and Paul
McCartney, were writing "all those great songs", he became intrigued by HOW they
were actually coming up with those "great songs". Although he followed the well-
traveled path of millions of other musicians by playing in cover bands, he constantly
wrote original songs and produced demos of them in his home recording setup. Tony:
“My very first band that I formed in middle school, I insisted that we play some of my
originals! As a 13 year old, I already had about 20 or so songs written."
Tony is not only a songwriter and musician, he's also been in broadcast radio for
years. He’s the general manager of WHJB-FM in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and is also
the host of a networked classic hits request show called Jukebox Saturday. Tony says:
"When I posted my song, Flirtin' Hurtin' Kind Of Thing, for a proposed TV show called
Do I Have A Hit Song, it garnered over 10,000 LIKE votes. I had already played the
song on my radio show and was pleasantly surprised that listeners then began calling
and emailing me to request the song - week after week! I thought, mmm, maybe I do
have a hit song!"
Musical influences for Tony? “Beatles, Stones, The Who…you name it, I’m a
sponge!” What’s a “good song”? Tony: “A great melody that hooks you in with lyrics that
tell a good story.”
What do the songs posted here sound like? “Rock, pop, soul, folk…lots of
different styles here!” Tony also plays all instruments and vocals on a good portion of
the songs here.
Tony is joined on some of these songs by Mike Andrews. Tony and Mike have written
about 30 songs together. Mike is heard dueting with Tony on “Stars In Their Courses”
and on lead vocals on “When Do We Call It Love”, “Broken” and “Never Too Late”.
From the catchy pop of the guitar-driven “Flirtin’ Hurtin’ Kind of Thing” to the haunting
ballad, “Stars In The Courses”, from dance beat hook-filled “Let’s Play With Fire” to the
power pop of “The Bitter End”, the 11 songs here from Tony Michaels and also Michaels
and Andrews, are sure to grab you by the ears and not let go for a long time
