Classes had begun to emerge more clearly, but much of the political divide was between modes of production; slavery on one hand, and financial capital/industry on the other. The South's |section" could largely stick together with its own interests which dominated American politics, for instance pushing for Texas to be annexed and then the Mexican-American War. So even those who did not own slaves had a vested interest (or so they thought) in maintaining the cotton empire.
