Zen Bolek Biography
Man is always searching for the meaning of life, knowledge; the answers to why we are here. Music is a powerful medium of communication. When words meet melody, a song is born. The cosmic sound of Zen Bolek wants to take the listener on a journey in to the realm of the unknown. The electronic beats are the vessel carried on a sea of electric guitar, Rhodes piano riffs, trippy synth sounds, and glitchy algorithms led by Inkzvolte's bluesy voice and the sweet, sensual harmonies of Milissa.
Zen Bolek began as two artists joined in a chance meeting to perform together at the Ultra Music Festival in 2010. Here minimal house producer Inkzvolte met the solo dance pop artist Milissa and it was magic. The name Zen Bolek is a clever play on the word ‘symbolic’ and is indicative of the shamanic undertones that subtly color the exotic sounds of the duo. Inkzvolte was born in the cradle of Western music - New Orleans – and from the young age of 13 he picked up his first guitar and never put it down. Fascinated with Music and possessing a great thirst for knowledge, Inkzvolte’s journey began, studying everything from rock to punk to acoustic to jazz. He graduated as an audio engineer from Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida and then moved to Buenos Aires to study bossa nova guitar. It was there that he began to discover minimal techno and deep house. Now based in Cancun, Mexico, where he grew up, he produces electronic music in a variety of styles and is currently studying the ancient art of healing through sound. Milissa was born on May 23rd, under the golden sun of Michigan, marked with the Gemini sign - the day of Energy. Her love of music also began at a young age, Studying dance most of her school years, she also sang in the school and church choir. Her pop career led her to perform in her own production company. Performing more than 300 shows, Milissa has appeared on radio and music television, performed several radio concerts, and in numerous clubs with DJ's all throughout Mexico.
The origin of Zen Bolek traces itself back to March 2010 when Milissa hired Inkzvolte to DJ for her Ultra Music Festival performance in Miami; afterwards she hired him to create a new project for her, which ended up being Zen Bolek. “We started recording our first three tracks in Mexico City, only one that we kept was “Away 11”, which was re-recorded in Barcelona when Inkz [Inkzvolte] was living there around November 2010. The sound kept changing and we also started dating, because of that Inkz moved back to Mexico in January 2011 where we continued to evolve spiritually and create more music, we put our studio by the beach and made about 12 tracks, which all carry our signature Zen Bolek sound.” recalls Milissa of the duo’s origin. In live performance both sing, Inkzvolte jams out on the electric guitar, Zen Bolek also incorporate synths, and - depending on the event – they also like to have live musicians like a sax player, or maybe a keyboard player to accompany the performance.
“The books we read, the places we have visited, and the instruments we bought also have inspired us to make much of our music: including a vintage Rhodes piano and vintage Thinline Fender Telecaster purchased in Hollywood and a sitar we picked up in London. We also have a couple of synths too: a Virus TI and Moog Little Phatty, along with a Taylor acoustic guitar. We also love to study consciousness and multidimensionality and want to give the world a good message of peace and hope.” the duo proclaims of its influences. Future plans including getting their latest recordings signed, developing new sounds, and continuing to refine Zen Bolek’s live performance.
