On one side, there is the harrowing sound design, the monstrous textures and the overall lugubrious ambiance throughout the record. It depicts the bleak existence of a solitary creature, repulsive yet confused, steadily dragging itself through a barren wasteland leaving pain and suffering in its wake. As the name of the record suggests, its other side is infused with hopeful and scaterred chords progressions paired with elegant motifs. While obscured by a thick layer of dark, desperate matter, a powerful light seeks tries to bring order to the underlying chaos. When taking a closer look and immersing oneself in Vicissitude, the apparent contradiction between those two fades away, and we’re let with a brilliant depiction of one’s humanity’s oldest story. The creature, despite its unrestrained nature, reaches a benevolent understanding of itself and blurs light and dark into a visceral manifestation of hope as the record concludes.
