ARCANE WORLD: THE INFRASTRUCTURE
I wake where I’ve never been,
where I find so serene.
My prints on the concrete,
my steps on the street…
A soothing breeze to caress my soul,
my inner you, you’ve taken your toll.
Most around me have stories about elsewhere. The word ‘elsewhere’ always includes the ambivalence of ‘here,’ and that’s where I didn’t want to be any more.
They had stories--they all did. How they bought vodka in Russia, felt the social burns of Parisians, the rush of the wind carried by the Caribbean Sea, the grandeur scale and sound of Niagara Falls, the teeming wildlife of Yellowstone--I didn’t. I had no access to the luxury of the outside world of Orange County and its exhaustive lifestyle. The luxury of travel. I’d be lucky enough to say that I had once or twice been to Las Vegas, a city I couldn’t particularly be fond of. The essence of travel, the very thing that people say truly broadens your mind, was something I would love to do... no, live. Nomadic almost, which I must believe it's possible.
I got my chance when I was unexpectedly accepted to college in Boston. The reality that in just a few months I would be across the nation hadn't fully sunk into my conscious state. I was almost hysterical internally, so much so, that I made a decision to emotionally let go of everything I had back at home. Everything.
Me? Imagine that. Boylston Street. I look around and it's nowhere I've been before--nothing like I've ever seen before. It's not like I was seeing the Taj Mahal, or Taipei 101, or any of the Seven Wonders of the World... but the culture shock electrified me. The hype was truly palpable.
I spent two years there. The Commons, the river, the parks; I spent a lot of time there, in every season. I found no greater peace in basking in the beauty of the horizon of the Charles River, so much so, that I would take a notebook and write music beside the waters as they cruised by. For once in my life, I felt like I could go and explore the entire city whenever and however I wanted.
I wanted to take art lessons as a kid. I wanted to write stories and create characters, so I decided to attend a tutor. I met up with an art teacher that provided a binder for me to pick out pictures I found the most pleasing. Upon evaluation, he concluded that I should be drawing landscapes. I disagreed, and ultimately, didn't attend.
Landscapes were some of the biggest sources of inspiration to me--I knew that. Arcane World is to recapture some of the aspects of my life where I truly felt the palpable grandeur feeling of being there... there, right in the landscapes; the shock of being somewhere I'd never been before. This piece draws from blue skies, blue grass, flourishing lands and caves teeming with wildlife, but where the birds exercise their freedom.
Shigeru Miyamoto once said that The Legend of Zelda stemmed from the inspiration of exploring caves and forests in Kyoto as a child. There is something about the memory of exploration that tickles your mind... bustles your heart.
