4. In Time You'll See by vince pope published on 2020-01-12T20:20:33Z “Sometimes a record comes around that is hard to quantify and yet strangely mesmerising. Messages from Vince Pope & the Bash Chapel Collective is one such record. According to Vince, the writer and choreographer of this collection of music, this album has been a decade in the making. Why? Well because in that time he has written the soundtrack to 5 seasons of Misfits, for which he was nominated for a Bafta and for which he won an RTS award for best soundtrack. Written music for 5 films and one of my favourite episodes of Black Mirror. Indeed at time of writing his music to the movie Tigers Are Not Afraid , a film directed by Issa Lopez which Stephen King and Guilertmo Del Torro have both described as unmissable is garnering loud praise. (If you haven’t seen it yet I suggest you do.) But now Messages. It is a challenging album that combines spoken word, flirts with neo-classical trope, uses gospel choirs and his trademark exquisite melody (anyone who has heard his Misfits theme Simon and Alisha will testify) to beguiling effect. Yes it really does defy simple description. But often this kind of fusion doesn’t really work and it’s at these moments that the music is at its most challenging and potentially rewarding. That the music is beautiful there is no doubt. He says of his next release that it will be completely paired back, solo piano and at most “a few other instruments” so make the most of this beautiful record. Take some time - find some space, and sit back and enjoy one of my releases of the year.
