(re)generations [music for plants, animals, and fungi] by ✮Chem♱XP✮ published on 2024-02-27T03:53:24Z I'd like to introduce the audio component to my Winter 2023-24 Installation "(re)generations" [ www.flow.page/re.generations ] " (re)generations is a sonic archetype of growth and complexity. A “Birkinian-Bodleyan” definition of complexity was used: “complexity is understood in terms of the quantity, order, and variety of musical elements or patterns” (Guy Birkin/Sun Hammer “Complexification”, 2015); adding in the variables: visual elements*, increase*, and time*; 6 iterations were generated along 1 composition. From simple (seed, sperm, spore); to complex (plant, animal, fungus). —— Includes archaeological sonic research of a modified Vito Leblanc alto sax (ca. 1980) [body, mouthpiece, and reed] that belonged to Chem XP's (Chaz's) late father, Clem Washington. One interpretation of the artist’s moniker can be a portmanteau of his and his father’s names, who suddenly died when the artist was 15. Apocryphally, leaving behind little but an old saxophone from abandoned dreams in Gonzales, Louisiana (apart from countless memories). The artist formed a makeshift neck for the saxophone from a recycled water hose to allow his ancestors to breathe in this project—with the help of a little LFO. " Thanks to KiTbetter (Korea) for inviting me back for another release this year at SXSW 2024. We met last SXSW, following which my film Language of the Birds (along with the whole soundtrack) was released on their cutting-edge product. This year, my latest installation will be presented in a similar manner. On March 13th, the 14th anniversary of my dad's passing, we’ll be releasing the KiT at the SXSW Convention Center Expo (and online): come stop by, I’ll have free copies and business card art. In the small chance I’m not present, see (re)generations posters around Austin, TX for QR code art in homage to one of my favorite paintings— Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Tuxedo” (1982). [(re)generations will officially release on date TBD, open to art gallery and independent label collaborators[email me]; including remix/edits by Ehsan Saboohi, Victor Moragues, and more TBD; 2024] Independently made in partnership with Noise à Noise [Berlin] & Post-Orientalism [Tehran] [Recorded in Austin, TX] [ www.flow.page/re.generations ] Genre Electronic
