The Parting Glass to Prince by Dan Lockhart published on 2016-04-22T14:51:01Z Mark placed this open collaboration up many months ago. I heard it and thought it was an odd, sober song. I dug a little into the history of this song and discovered that it is a great classic sung by many people. I made my own version and shared it with Mark. I thought I may never release it for other's to hear. I heard many people play it in so many different manners. Then I head many fantastic alterations of Mark's version. I felt surely my version had nothing to add to all of those wonderful renditions. So it sat for many months. A while back Mark discussed with me the idea of releasing it. I went back and listened to it. I decided that it was not terrible (which too often some of my songs are not fit for human consumption). Today seemed the right day to post it and send my parting glass to Prince. Here is my(very traditional) arrangement: Dm C Of all the money that e'er I spent Dm C I've spent it in good company Dm C And all the harm that ever I did Dm C Dm Alas it was to none but me F And all I've done for want of wit Gm F To memory now I can't recall Dm C So fill to me the parting glass Dm C Dm Good night and joy be with you all If I had money enough to spend And leisure to sit awhile There is a fair maid in the town That sorely has my heart beguiled Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips I own she has my heart enthralled So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had They're sorry for my going away And all the sweethearts that e'er I had They'd wish me one more day to stay But since it falls unto my lot That I should rise and you should not I'll gently rise and softly call Good night and joy be with you all Good night and joy be with you all You can find many excellent versions of Mark's collaboration here: https://soundcloud.com/markjbennett/sets/the-parting-glass-open Please take a minute and send a parting glass to Prince Genre World Comment by REI Koizumi Attractive vocal and sound arrangement! 2022-01-12T16:36:05Z Comment by fugaaa you bring me in Ireland guys! fantastic!! 2017-04-26T16:53:08Z Comment by ProgRockDan Instrumentals @user-830390974: Thank you cara 2016-11-12T15:08:03Z Comment by Mountain Songs Mark's original lends itself so well to seemingly endless wonderful variations, as is the case right here. YES!! 2016-04-25T14:58:48Z Comment by Oorlab super - fitting the parting of Prince. Quite amazing how many chords this vocal line can follow. 2016-04-24T19:49:27Z Comment by Heartscore You have transformed the parting glass into another kind of song with the reharmonisation; I also like the majestic drums and the double-bass, like a funeral-march 2016-04-24T12:54:16Z Comment by Paul Scheberle, TN.USA Beautiful tribute with a unique flavor. 2016-04-23T17:20:08Z Comment by PACMAN 🎲 great vocals and tribute my friend 2016-04-23T11:58:57Z Comment by Lee >>> Lucas Well I do not see what all the fuss was about with you not wanting to put it out originally Dan and your music is long shot off the way you described it as not being good enough at all. This actually works very well with wast you did here to be honest. I love the percussion and it gives it this dark Medieval and historic feel about. The other instrumentation blends in very well indeed and you done a fabulous job here my good friend and very well enjoyed indeed. 2016-04-23T10:28:22Z Comment by David Skellenger Oh, this version works so well with your able additions and a very fine way to say farewell! 2016-04-23T01:26:26Z Comment by Rock Flexible (Official) love this song! 2016-04-22T20:40:30Z Comment by E-Ruizzo Solemn drumming too... 2016-04-22T17:23:51Z Comment by E-Ruizzo Evocative sounds on background, recalling distant bagpipes... 2016-04-22T17:22:10Z Comment by Tony's Lyrics Very nice way to remember Prince...wonderful collaboration Dan and Mark. 2016-04-22T16:35:37Z Comment by Tom Watts music Another good one. (I've never seen such a symmetrical waveform on Soundcloud . . .) 2016-04-22T16:07:09Z Comment by Grain Space Very romantic. Good song. 2016-04-22T16:04:53Z Comment by markjbennett Thank you Dan for rising to this very challenging task with a suitably sombre farewell to Prince. Haunting, primitive (in the best sense) and melancholic. You've applied your out of the box thinking here as you always do and come up with something highly original. Best to you, Mark 2016-04-22T15:26:04Z Comment by Jimena Oh, another version of this song! I love to hear so many different ones... it's incredible what you all can do to make it sound so different each time. Mark's vocals are impeccable and so is your work, Dan :) Congrats 2016-04-22T14:54:50Z
