Kris Levy
Warsaw
If they were electing the nicest DJ in Poland, Levy could surely count on a higher position than the one he achieved in “Laif” magazine’s Top 100 poll. And yet the sixth place for loads of people would be a dream that came true. But Krzysiek has always behaved like a person, who’s dreams always come true. Constant smile, spontaneity and a will to act are not common features, in Poland sometimes taken as symptoms of a mental disease. But there must be a dose of insanity in him, because who of sound mind would decide to mix vinyls in the days, when only a handful of people in Warsaw knew what dance music was all about?
It was 1996, when Levy began his 3 year residency at Trend – one of the first proper clubs in the capital. People still have fond memories of the Rush House Parties and it was Krzysiek among others who created the incredible and unforgettable atmosphere of those nights. He took his first steps under DJ Easy’s supervision – a person that he still calls his musical godfather. After learning the basics, he was completely absorbed in the art of mixing as he knew that even the best tunes won’t sound good if the track selection doesn’t go together with technical skills.
Aside from the aforementioned features, Levy has another one that naturally flows out of his character – excellent communication with the crowd. Always opened, he soaks up dancing people’s enthusiasm to give it back with twice the strength. He desires exactly the same things as them so sometimes it is hard to pick the DJ out of the bouncing crowd. Only headphones distinguish him from other dancing figures. This happens almost always and everywhere. And everywhere in this case doesn’t sound excessively as there aren’t many places in Poland he hasn’t performed at. And even those that remain “undiscovered” will soon probably change their status. Krzysiek has also started to show his skills abroad and during the summer of 2005 he was invited to play in Edinburgh and Dublin.
However, Levy isn’t always a guest. Together with Matush and JJack they run the Phatbass agency, which parties at Ground Zero and Klatka invariably gather a wide audience of cheerful and lively house fans. Although saying that Krzysiek plays only house would be a big misunderstanding. Elements of techno and trance he incorporates into his sets make his sound widely recognizable. And Phatbass is not the only venture he is involved with. Co-operations with Sentence agency and The Rhythm Records are fruitful and show that the development of the Polish club scene is still one of Krzysiek’s main ambitions. And ambition is something he does not lack, so if you want to listen to a DJ full of determination and joy, the answer for your needs is Levy.
