Matthew Ives Matthew Tāmati Scott Wellington Like the music they make, the history of Ētienne de Silhouette is a slow burn, and has been woven together from many threads. Originating as a solo outlet for guitarist Matthew Tāmati Scott, the band has evolved over the past four years as he’s brought in other veterans of New Zealand’s underground music scene to flesh out what has now become a shared vision. Today, Ētienne de Silhouette is a quintet comprising former members of Disjecta Membra, Splintered in Her Head, Sullen Moon, Blutfleck, Vicious Mandy, and Marineville, to name just a few. These five musicians have worked together for over a decade in different guises, and their influences are wide ranging - encompassing the darker, angular, psychedelic, and atmospheric byways of rock and pop music over the last four decades. 2017 is a year of renewed focus for the band, as they go into the studio and undertake a series of live gigs. Their debut track “A Blow Upon a Bruise”, originally recorded for the 31 Days in Wellington project, is just a taste of what’s to come. Daniel R.
