GE-OLOGY's exclusive mix for Rainbow Disco Club 2022 podcast:
If I had to choose one word to describe the theme of the mix, it would be TRAVELING. But conceptually, it's more about traveling in ALL its various forms...physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Two years ago, the entire world came to a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and traveling came to an abrupt stop across the planet in response. Nation after nation closed its borders throughout numerous continents, and soon everyone found themselves confined at home isolated from each other, and our loved ones. And that experience has forever changed us. That alone is another form of traveling...one of pain, difficulty and growth that takes us to new places inside ourselves, even when we're not physically flying across oceans, or gathering with our beloved family and friends (due to social distancing guidelines, quarantines and safety restrictions). But life is a constant journey, so traveling (in a sense) has been a recurring theme for me in all the creative forms of my visual and musical expression, as well as throughout my life's experiences. [Traveling = Movement = Growth = Evolving = Rebirth]. Our journeys continue to shape who we are.
So the mix begins with an introductory exchange between Zenigata Keibu and Mine Fujiko (excerpt from Lupin III) which brings forth the subject of traveling--as the Inspector is in constant yet futile pursuit of Lupin (who had already left on a trip just ahead of Inspector Zenigata's arrival). This Japanese manga series cult classic, inspired by Arsène Lupin (the gentleman thief and detective character created by French writer Maurice LeBlanc) felt like the perfect dialogue to use as the introduction for the deep and heavy mix of vinyl selections to follow. The mix features some special records from my collection, amassed from decades of diggin' around the world [Japan included], which in itself is a byproduct of many great opportunities to travel--for which I'm deeply grateful. The 2nd record I play in the mix, aptly titled "Everybody's On A Trip" by Garden of Eden (the brainchild of gifted Birmingham, Alabama musician Ken Talley), was originally released as a single with limited local success back in 1979. Largely unknown for 28 years, it would later become a highly sought-after 7-inch for DJs and record collectors after Kon and Amir's 'Off Track' series release in 2007 put it on the map. But the mix delves even deeper with a mixture of other rare and obscure records (that have now become quite expensive), private pressings, and even some cheap 'under-the-radar' HEAT that spans the late 70s and early 80s, right up to the present. With a focus towards music lovers, dancers, audiophiles and collectors alike, it builds up slowly and seamlessly into a full-fledged dance-floor experience, navigating through the worlds of jazz, funk, disco, soul, island-funk, post-punk, Brazilian and beyond. It's a celebration of the world reopening again, and finally getting the opportunity to appreciate music together and dance at Rainbow Disco Club. Enjoy!
