Health Pearl #493 - Vitamin-B and Homocysteine by Gesundheit with Jacobus published on 2012-10-06T22:03:15Z There are those who worry about their cholesterol being high, and the fear that may result in atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries due to the accumulation of fatty plaques. However, THIS is not caused by cholesterol being one way-or-another, it may be caused by high HOMOCYSTEINE levels in the blood. When the amino acid, or protein, Homocysteine is NOT properly converted, we end up with high Homocysteine levels, which are directly related to an increased risk for atherosclerosis and strokes. As far as this conversion is concerned, Homocysteine needs adequate amounts of the B-Vitamins B-6, B-12 (in the Methyl- form), and Folic Acid, or Folate. If your doctor tells you he/she is worried about your cholesterol, ask for your Homocysteine levels, as well as something called CRP or C-Reactive Protein, which measures inflammation. These are more valuable for diagnosing cardiovascular issues than cholesterol alone. Please come-in for more, important health education …at the Gesundheit! Nutrition Center, on North 19th Avenue.
