That sunny morning in November, Hekske, the little witch, woke up under a glorious sunrise. For the first time this year, temperatures had dropped below zero and the whole forest was covered under a mesmerizing layer of ice crystals. Falke, the 9 year old witch apprentice, had once again snuggled under the moss blanket of the witch to keep warm. Hekske was looking tenderly at the sleeping Falke, who had made tremendous progress during the 6 months since she decided to become a witch. The girls had become very close, but both of them understood that one day they needed to part ways as Falke had to find a new forest for herself, in order to fulfil her lifelong mission to protect nature. Unfortunately, apart from their home forest, there were no other forests of a decent size in this area.
At the first ray of sunlight, the witches got up and slipped into their immaculately white dresses. A little later, both girls were sipping from a warm cup of herbal tea and their morning mood brightened up considerably when they realized it was the new moon day, which meant it was the day of their monthly excursion outside the witch’s forest. They waited for the sun to warm everything up a bit, after which they took off and headed towards the northwest (it’s a little-known fact that witches don’t need a broom to fly). This time it was a really short flight of only a few minutes. After passing over the river Dender, they saw a gathering of people in the middle of a meadow. Normally, witches avoid contact with humans, but this time the girls got intrigued and they discretely touched down behind a row of trees before mingling with the crowd. Some people looked in surprise at the strange barefoot girls with their mesmerizing eyes and long white dresses, which was a pretty unusual sight in late November. It soon became clear that these people were going to plant trees to give birth to a brand new forest covering 33 hectares in the valleys of two little streams, the Beverbeek and Kabbeek.
Soon the crowd started planting trees (a well-balanced mix of high-value endemic species like oak, beech and alder). The enthusiastic volunteers of the independent organization ‘Natuurpunt’ had already dug the plant holes in the so-called ‘kloempen’ pattern, which are clusters of 25 trees. The two barefoot witches also gave a helping hand. They only planted one tiny oak tree, and it soon became clear that they had a unique way of doing things. Before putting the sapling in the ground, they first held the tiny oak tree in their hands for a long time and softly whispered some magic spells. And after its roots touched the soil, the tiny tree started to emit a soft pinkish glow, which was slowly pulsing like a faint heartbeat. After a while, the surrounding trees started to glow as well, until all 25 trees of the ‘kloemp’ were pulsating in sync, as if they were sharing the same heartbeat. The little witches decided that their presence was no longer needed and discretely left the scene and flew back to their home ‘Neigembos’ forest. They turned back one last time , and saw from above that all the newly planted trees were now glowing and pulsing with the same heartbeat, which seemed to become stronger and stronger. Nature had finally started to find its way back…
