One of the BBC's New Generation Artists, young pianist Igor Levit has also been announced as one of the artists taking part in the ECHO Rising Stars series this season, showcasing Levit’s talent in venues such as BOZAR inBrussels, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and the Vienna Konzerthaus.
Orchestral concerts this season include performances with the Münchner Kammerorchester, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. He will also appear as soloist with the WDR Sinfonieorchester under Krzysztof Urbański, will tour Europe with Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie and perform at the 2013 Kissinger Sommer Festival with the Residentie Orkest under Lawrence Foster.
This season sees Levit appear in recital at venues including the Cologne and Luxembourg Philharmonies, Athens Megaron, Konserthus in Stockholm, L’Auditori Pau Casals in Barcelona, Birmingham's Symphony Hall, Budapest's Palace of Arts, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Sage Gateshead. Levit is Artist in Residence at the 2013 Heidelberger Frühling, an appointment that sees him perform in recital, act as Artistic Director at the festival’s chamber music academy and appear as soloist at the festival’s closing concert with Die Deutsche KammerphilharmonieBremen under Roger Norrington.
Last season’s orchestral highlights included appearances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (Vladimir Jurowski), the Budapest Festival Orchestra (Iván Fischer) and the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover (Eivind Gullberg Jensen), as well as his debut with the Staatskapelle Dresden (Mikhail Jurowski). In recital, he returned to the Prinzregententheater inMunich, Alte Oper Frankfurt, and made debuts at the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Mozarteum Salzburg, and Konzerthaus Berlin, as well as a recital tour of Japan in February 2012. Levit recently performed at such festivals as the the Klavierfestival Ruhr, Rheingau Musik Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn, Schumannfest Düsseldorf and Musikfest Stuttgart.
A devoted chamber musician, recital partners have included Lisa Batiashvili, François Leleux, Gautier and Renaud Capuçon, Mischa Maisky, Maxim Vengerov, Lawrence Power, Maximilian Hornung and Tabea Zimmermann, with whom he will collaborate in a concert at the Beethovenhalle Bonn.
Igor took four prizes at the 2005 International Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition as the youngest artist in the process, won second prize at the 2004 International Maria Callas Grand Prix inAthens, and first prize at the International Hamamatsu Piano Academy Competition inJapan.
Recently graduated from the Hochschule für Musik in Hannover, Levit achieved the highest grades in the history of the college. His teachers include Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, Matti Raekallio, Bernd Goetzke, Lajos Rovatkay and Hans Leygraf. Since 2003 Levit has been supported by the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes and the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. He plays a Steinway D-grand piano generously provided by the foundation 'Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells'.
