2000 Hinterland [Ενδοχώρα] Full album [CD release] Based on Hinterland of Andreas Empeirikos by Ilias Chadjoglou published on 2024-02-19T13:40:08Z www.allmusic.com/album/hinterland-mw0000965978 Allmusic review by François Couture Hinterland is Ilias Chadjoglou's first album. It contains only one work, the 40-minute title track, a piece inspired by (and occasionally using excerpts from) Andreas Empeirikos' poetry book by the same title. Empeirikos was the most highly regarded Greek surrealist poet, and the release of this CD coincided with his 100th birthday. "Hinterland" is a slow, haunting, and fascinating piece of work borrowing from musique concrète, electro-acoustics, synthesizer music, audio art, and sound collage. The listener is taken on a dreamlike -- yes, surrealist -- journey where pitchless sounds and background noises weave strange textures, voices briefly appear reciting snippets of texts in Greek, and sculpted sounds describe arabesques, retreating to reveal unadulterated notes: a piano, some percussion, a double bass. The language barrier is by no means an obstacle to a full appreciation of this album -- it only adds to the unreal feeling capturing the listener. For a work of youth (Chadjoglou was only 26 at the time), Hinterland shows enormous amounts of poetic perception and talent at soundcrafting. Very impressive and strongly recommended. Hinterland was released with eye-catching artwork by the Greek avant-garde label Edo in a limited run of 760 copies. Genre Electronic
