Sponsored by Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-South Dakota and Rep. Mary Sattler Peltola, D-Alaska, the bill would permit Tribal I.D. to be used for firearm purchases. Indigenous-led clean energy projects in Canada are proving to be important in reaching the country’s future goals. First Nations now own, co-own, or have defined financial agreements for almost 20 percent of the country’s electricity production. A 2020 report by the Indigenous Clean Energy Social Enterprise identified 197 renewable energy projects with Native involvement. The Canadian government is setting goals to achieve net-zero for its electricity grid as early as 2035 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Navajo Nation is mourning the loss of another leader. The Nation’s former President Ben Shelly died last week at age 75. Shelly was elected in 2011, and served one term as vice president in 2007. Shelly’s passing comes just weeks after the loss of former President Peterson Zah. President Joe Biden officially declared Avi Kwa Ame as a national monument, March 21. The designation of the southern Nevada site came as a major celebration to the tribes who hold that land with significance. In Fort Hall, Idaho, there’s a new venture aiming to feed the community and bring joy. The Turquoise is a new food truck owned by Indigenous entrepreneurs Sonia Lavatta and Anthony Rivera.
