Jabez Co (b. 1989; Manila, Philippines) composes vivid music that speaks to a wide range of audiences, inspired by genres ranging from Gregorian chant to musical theater. His works are significantly influenced by his experience as an avid performer of concert pieces, new compositions, and stage music. Jabez writes concert and dramatic works, creating a fusion of classical and Broadway idioms in both genres. He received a Doctor of Music in Composition from Florida State University, where he studied primarily with Clifton Callender. He has also studied with Ladislav Kubík, Paul Richards, Steve Rouse, Jennifer Jolley, Clint Needham, and Jason Bahr. Jabez participated in additional lessons with many composers, including Louis Andriessen, David Felder, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Joel Hoffman, Bent Sorensen, Djuro Zivkovic, Brett Dean, Stacy Garrop, Dan Visconti, Claude Baker, Christopher Theofanidis, Sean Beeson, and Joseph Schwantner.
As a flutist, Jabez has performed in Dallas, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Milwaukee, WI; Racine, WI; Manila, Philippines; Osaka, Japan; and Shanghai, China. Jabez served as principal piccoloist of the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra, as principal flutist of the Ohio Wesleyan University Chamber Orchestra and the Ohio Wesleyan University Wind Ensemble, and as associate flutist and piccoloist for the New Albany Symphony Orchestra. He performed with guitarist Michael Kagan in the Terravento Duo and has also performed with the Manila Symphony Orchestra and for the American Bandmasters Association. Past flute teachers include Kathy Karr, Nancy Gamso, Randy Hester, Sir Eric Barcelo, and Jamie Miller.
