BACK & FORTH (Johnson + Yudo) by Luiz Henrique Yudo published on 2014-01-09T10:57:28Z BACK & FORTH (2012) by Tom Johnson and Luiz Henrique Yudo This collaboration between Tom Johnson and Luiz Henrique Yudo was one of the several commissions given by the percussion ensemble SLAGWERK DEN HAAG to celebrate John Cage centenary. Cage once collaborated with Lou Harrison on a work entitled 'Double Music' , each agreeing to write percussion music in a certain tempo for a certain length of time, without knowing what the other would write. In the case of Johnson and Yudo, they decided to write ten minutes of music that would go BACK & FORTH from one composer to the other every ten seconds. It begins with Johnson, respecting alphabetical order. Yudo's part is scored for five players (in this case, five percussionists). Each player reads from a stave of three lines indicating three different sounds - these can be freely chosen pitches, chords or found objects, and can be played on any instrument (pitched or unpitched) ad libitum. Canon and symmetry have generated the basic structure of the music.
