Mara Aranda_El Marido Carpintero by mara_aranda published on 2017-01-27T15:57:54Z “El marido carpintero”. “A carpenter as a husband” . Wedding song, chosen from the huge abundance of songs of this genre. These songs reveal the connection of Sephardic lyric with medieval Spanish, which is shown in the way phrases and scenes out of ancient Spanish lyric live on. In the first song, as a stereotype of Hispanic lyric (las cantigas de amigo), the bride visits her mother to get up early on a Monday, a bustling day in several romances, to go to "find a husband on the market". The choice of someone hard working and professionally successful reflects the values of Sephardic society. Some verse emphasize the virginity of the bride, whose key of her locked strongbox is kept by the bridegroom-to-be.
