Green Eye of the Yellow God is a retelling of one of Mortimer’s favorite poems by J. Milton Hayes written in 1911. She wanted to create an enchanting, subtle, relatable, yet still dynamically stimulating and powerful atmosphere. To do so, she settled on using an instrumentally minimalistic though spirited soundscape and enhanced it with a rich melody, an indelibly catchy chorus, and nuanced and emotive vocals.
LYRICS
There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Kathmandu,
There's a little marble cross below the town,
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down
He was known as Mad Carew
And the colonel’s daughter was his fool
He loved her all along with a passion so strong
She was fond of him too
So he asked her what she wanted,
The- green eye of the little Yellow God would do
There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Kathmandu,
There's a little marble cross below the town,
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down
And the Yellow God forever gazes down
So one night before a dance, Mad Carew was in a trance
Failed to smile, left for awhile, poor man was crazed at glance
No knew where he went, the colonels daughter was left left to lament
Returning with his shirt torn
Gash across his temples dripping red
The colonel’s daughter feeling a storm
Her heart filling with horror and dread
Cause Mad Carew was dead
There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Kathmandu,
There's a little marble cross below the town,
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down
While he slept with his door wide open
Silver moonlight pouring through
Colonel’s daughter walking in subdued, her eyes wet, her soul cut in two (Little Yellow God of Kathmandu)
Ugly knife in her field of view, buried deep through the heart of Mad Carew
T’was the wrath and vengeance of the little Yellow God of Kathmandu
There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Katmandu,
There's a little marble cross below the town,
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down
There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Kathmandu,
There's a little marble cross below the town,
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down
And the Yellow God forever gazes down
Forever gazes down
