Nick Pizetoski
New York
Nick Piz is a house music DJ from Suffolk County in Long Island. Since a young age he always seemed to be musically inclined. At the age of 13, he bought FL Studio and learned how to produce simple hip hop instrumentals. Around the same age he also discovered electronic music online. He came across some of the big Trance DJ’s of the time, many who are still extremely popular today.
During the summer after his sophomore year in college, a bunch of his friends from his hometown started getting into the house music scene. That June, his friend convinced him to come out to Webster Hall to see DJ Brian Massey headline. After hearing Brian’s set that night, he was hooked on the house music sound that themed the night. From there, the idea of attempting to DJ himself spawned. Coincidentally, Massey happened to be spinning only a block away from where Nick was living in the following fall semester. It was this weekend night in Albany where he got to talk to Brian outside of a normal NYC club environment and ask how he should go about beginning to DJ. Brian was more than welcoming to help point a newbie in the right direction.
After demonstrating strong dedication, passion, and effort, Massey was convinced of Nick’s true passion. He decided to help get Nick his first gig at Pacha NYC, spinning alongside himself. This was Thanksgiving Night 2011, when Chuckie and Nervo headlined. This night Nick proved he could deliver as a DJ to a live audience. From that point on, Nick and Brian have been working together consistently. Nick will always idolize and be very thankful to Brian Massey for inspiring him to begin as a house music DJ, helping him learn, and providing opportunity that would have been unlikely without him.
Nick expands to a variety of different genres, which he divides among his two signature styles. His primary signature style contains a blend of progressive house, deep house, progressive techno, nu disco, and more. His other style consists of a more dark selection of techno, tech house, minimal, deep house, and more.
He personally believes that many people just become passable DJ’s. They become technically good enough to not “train wreck” or make other types of very noticeable errors. Many of these people think there is no reason to work on improvement as a DJ further than that. In contrast, Nick believes that almost anyone can achieve that level of skill, which is just the beginning. He is constantly trying to improve upon all aspects of DJ mixing. In all of his sets he aims to create a piece of art that others can follow. He tries to convey a theme, mood, or picture with the audience through his sets. His goal is to share and create music that he personally connects with and hopefully pass on that connection to anyone who listens.
