NY Night Train ANIMAL PRINT Exotic Rock and Roll Mix! by Jonathan Toubin / New York Night Train published on 2013-04-23T20:39:55Z New York Night Train's ANIMAL PRINT Exotic Rock'n'Roll mix is a JONATHAN TOUBIN DJ set of the type of weird, wild, and way out sounds you will find at his Sunday, April 28 ANIMAL PRINT PARTY at Brooklyn's GLASSLANDS GALLERY… Recorded live by Pineapple Studios' Ivan Sunshine from the original 45s. This collection of peculiar post cards from the more bizarre end of the mid-century modern imagination are middle-American dreams of faraway exotic places - from Middle Eastern deserts to Mexico to African jungles to Hawaiian Islands to outer space - imagining everything from the future to ancient civilizations. A bizarro world music that has less to do with authentic musical cultures themselves than a Hollywood simulacrum - saying a lot about the post-war American view of the world and desire for the curious, the strange, and the novel. The crazy rhythms, unusual melodies, weird harmonies, and uncommon instrumentation, when added to the rock and roll/pop aesthetics of the time, make for much more unusual original music that really holds up. Though there's no shortage of the sound effects, unusual rhythms, elaborate percussion, and pentatonic scales associated with the "exotica" genre, and the danceable drums, heavy rhythm guitar, and sleazy saxophones place many of these songs within the "tittyshaker" genre, this stuff begs for a genre of its own. So hey party animals, everyone who turns up in cheetah, zebra, leopard, tiger, or other animal print clothing gets in for FREE - as tonight your attire will be the ambiance. Let's get into it!
