Popi Divine
Belgrade
Popi Divine mixed his fingers in electronic music, and if he was expected to stay on the violin, in the ill-fated '90s. and without a single letter, like DJ Pop. So long ago that his biography can easily be called a bibliography.
He often performed in Belgrade cafes and smaller clubs, persistent, thorough and always daring, which can still be felt today in his music, which is always unlimited, surprising, and in some moments cheeky. Only well-listened connoisseurs can allow themselves to characterize him by genre, while the rest just enjoy and react well to the paths he takes the audience, with equal commitment wherever he performs.
He participates in various projects, dealing with both production and performing, with the desire to present electronic music as very melodic and cohesive.
In 2010, he started his record company "Industrial records" with his conceptual partner B-Like.
In 2012, periodic collaboration with the string quartet "Wonder Strings", which continues to this day.
In 2015, he was a finalist in the global competition "Burn Residency" in Ibiza as a representative of Serbia. I don't know why he doesn't like to brag about it. That experience in some more mature years brought him a different perspective and self-observation outside the standard framework of Belgrade's then already established underground scene which he ruled. Studying, collaborating and talking with the biggest names such as Carl Cox, Marco Bailey and others, helped him in further choosing the direction in which he will move and develop.
As a "hater" on call, he deftly resisted entry into systems, mainstream and sponsor colors (he even filled Burn cans with water in Ibiza), always supporting the increasingly hard-to-sustain, healthy clubbing culture, which he advocates by presenting the bigger picture to new audiences and new hopes, giving way to the dj desk and if sometimes it's really hard to take it off.
Bookings, programs, management, organization of events, advice, and even listening to some techno that he can't stand, are his support for the breathing of the scene, which should breathe in the same rhythm. Harmonious and without vanity.
He says that what he snorted, he snorted, I don't know what exactly he means, but it is clear that he leaves room for new hopes, promoters, audiences for whom he is willing to give direction and help with the creation of new currents, appreciating quality and good music, so much strong, like they used to be when they couldn't break down, listening to everything, wandering everywhere while everything was more important to them except music.
In love with music and love, he easily resists thrash, (he also likes to wear thrash) and turns to future projects, even experimental ones, striving to provide his audience with a final product that must be of high quality. Forever in his beloved Belgrade, where the audience can most often listen to him in the favorite clubs and other places that try hard to make the real scene survive various shocks and no trends. Still, he's an old school dude in love with vinyls, yet also excited by new technologies. And if a computer is mixing, what would our DJ Straw say, who is surely cheering from heaven so that we don't shut down this charming scene of ours, which is the pericardium of the heart of Belgrade.
(for the anatomy of the heart and understanding of the pericardium and fluid, consult wikipedia, and if you are an older clubber, visit a cardiologist)
In the summer in Montenegro, he enjoys Virtu beach doing programs and bookings for well-known Virtu Sunsets parties with names such as Volen Sentir, Dave Seaman, Roy Rosenfeld, Armonica,Sebastien Leger, Khen... as well as local performers: Marko Nastić, Buba, Vanyano, Milij Sefić, Mr. Jools…
Rhythm, rhythm, groove. It's PopI.
It was not easy to present a man who is a walking encyclopedia of Belgrade clubbing and a witness to a time that will not return, and not drown like he sometimes does with All Day I Dream.
What else will he come up with and which monastery of underground culture will he restore, we will find out by following him.
But not only on Instagram... Whoever wants, can, of course. @popidivine
